Robert Downey, Jr. said it, playing The eponymous Sherlock Holmes in a 2009 motion picture. I assume the quotation may have been used elsewhere, as well.

"What if I told you insane was working fifty hours a week in some office for fifty years at the end of which they tell you to piss off; ending up in some retirement village hoping to die before suffering the indignity of trying to make it to the toilet on time?"

This one is a dead loss, not only because no one has found the quote but also because I can no longer identify it. Alan Bates said it in a Steven Seagal movie (Bates must have been desperate for work), but I'll be damned if I can remember which movie. IMDB's two-matching search used to be helpful but no longer is. So let's just forget about whether Hitler was crazy or just stupid and instead go with:

"But can we beat the rap? That's the rancid test!"

Robert Redford in The Candidate. It's the last line spoken in the movie and the first line written for the script.

Unfortunately, it's a nonspecific line and is also spoken in Cool Hand Luke, 12 Angry Men, The Thing, Basic Instinct, Dogma, Sister Act, Evil under the Sun, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Godzilla, Wag the Dog, The World Is Not Enough and many, many more (I got tired of looking them up). Kay may have been thinking of one of those. Too generic to tell.

Douglas Spencer in the original The Thing. Odd, but for years I remembered that line as "Watch the skies! Watch them!" But that's not right. I also got it in my head that Ken Tobey said the line, but he didn't. Hm.

"You go in, find the President, bring him out in 24 hours, and you're a free man."

"My friend, Thomas Jefferson is an American saint because he wrote the words 'All men are created equal,' words he clearly didn't believe since he allowed his own children to live in slavery. He's a rich wine snob who's sick of paying taxes to the Brits. So, yeah, he writes some lovely words and aroused the rabble and they went and died for those words while he sat back and drank his wine and fucked his slave girl. This guy wants to tell me we're living in a community? Don't make me laugh. I'm living in America, and in America you're on your own. America's not a country. It's a business. Now fuckin' pay me."

That's similar to what's been said about The Counselor, another Brad Pitt movie. In fact, both movies are extremely well done, but they both say things so unpalatable that audiences are rejecting them out of hand. For instance, The Counselor says it's neither governments nor corporations that run the world, it's the drug cartels. And nobody wants to believe that.

Pete, how about a new quote?

The question should have been phrased giving only the quote, and the answer should have been "Nelson Eddy".
