Jurassic World is a ludicrous movie, a joke, an amusement park ride. It is soooo derivative, and it's chock-full of continuity errors. But it's still kind of fun to watch, even if you just sit there and laugh at the boo-boos. Chris Pratt is sufficiently manly as the hero, Ron Howard's daughter plays his love interest, and of course there are two cute kids in the midst of all the mayhem. But there was one performance worthy of note, Vincent's d'Onofrio's half-likable, potbellied half-villain. A different kind of villain, and that came from the acting, not the lines.

This is the first Jurassic movie without Sam Neill, Jeff Goldblum, and Laura Dern. Spielberg has been quoted as saying including them would be looking back, and he wanted to look forward, to introduce a new generation to the Jurassic experience. Well, he can do that only if the new generation grew up in homes with no television sets. Those first movies have been shown on TV off and on for nearly twenty years.

They even used the same explanation for why their new super-dino went berzerk that they used in the first movie, that genetic material from other species was added to the mix to enhance certain qualities (such as improved eyesight) but which turned out to have disastrous side effects. The scientists in the current movie should have watched the first movie so they'd know not to make the same mistake. Preposterous.

My favorite boo-boo came in the scene where the two kids did a Butch and Sundance leap off a cliff. They pulled themselves out of the river onto a muddy bank, and just lay there in the mud, gasping for breath. In their very next scene, their clothes had been laundered and the younger boy's hair blow-dried. Wasn't anybody paying attention when they made this movie?

I thought there were too many dinosaurs. I know they couldn't recapture that sense of wonder when the dinos made their first appearance in Jurassic Park, but flooding the screen with the creatures isn't the answer. More isn't always better, especially when some of them are just cute animals in a petting zoo. The dinos weren't awesome, they were just noisy. I like awesome.

Despite the praise I've read for it, I was surprised at the impact made by the new Pixar film, Inside Out. It achieves remarkable suspense and satisfaction without a villain -- in fact that circumstance is a key point, that someone who seems like the enemy in the early going has a different role to play. I could maybe have done with an extra five minutes letting the resolution play out, but otherwise I have no fault to find

Really? Hmm. I saw enlarged Japanese eyes and blue hair and dismissed it out of hand. Sounds as if I made a mistake.
