Yes, the hockey players were the right winners, but I feel sorry for Katie (and not for coming in second!).

Yes, the right guys won, but don't you think this race was rather bland? It's become mechanical; the excitement is gone.

Survivor -- poor Brenda. The minute she gave her reward to the losers, she was a goner; we all know how far gratitude goes in this game. The dynamics between Brenda and Dawn has been interesting as a sort of role-reversal -- the weepy, semi-hysterical older woman being looked after and comforted by the younger, na´ve woman. How will Dawn fare on her own now?

I was pulling for Dawn when this one started, but all the crying and emotionalism and falling apart over every little thing that happens...now I just wish they'd vote her out. I'm tired of the histrionics.

Bad news. Southland has been canceled.

Oh, that is bad news. When I first started watching Southland in late-night repeats, Lucy Liu was still on the show. A security camera caught her by herself trying to arrest a man three times her size. He beat the crap out of her. The security tape was shown at the station house, not just to humiliate her but for its unspoken message: Wait for back-up, even if it means losing the collar. Those were strong images, and they're stuck in my head. I'm sorry the show has been cancelled.

Liu, of course, is still on TV; I find the dialogue in Sherlock goes by too fast to understand, so I don't watch it, but I did see the end the other evening; evidently Irene Adler has turned up again.

Speaking of Adler; who write the short series of books starring her as the heroine?

Pete, Carole Nelson Douglas seems to be who you mean. Wikipedia has a section on her reappearances: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irene_Adler#Later_appearances

Mike, I'm kind of surprised you watch police shows. I'd think you'd had enough of that during the day.

I don't watch them, I just sample the new ones to see if they are anywhere close to getting it right. Southland is the only police show I returned to and I didn't watch it every week, it depended on the kind of day I had.
